Is Coconut Oil really good for the Skin?

So is coconut oil really good for our skin? I get this question asked to me quite often by my skin care clients, particularly new clients.

And here is my answer based upon my experience working on a variety of skin care conditions for over 14 years...

I am confident in the benefits that coconut oil can provide the skin for isolated and short term skin issues; its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties can be very healing and have worked wonders on my daughters' diaper rashes. I am sure many of you out there have also encountered a situation where coconut oil was your saving grace. I do not doubt its health benefits and healing abilities whatsoever.

I am however, not confident in its hydrating or moisturizing benefits for long term use as coconut oil is actually considered to be highly comedogenic. Long term use of this product being applied as a "moisturizer" on the skin is not recommended as it can interfere with our body's own natural cell turn over process. When this interference takes place, our skin cells do no have the ability to shed and slough off on their own, causing layers of dead skin buildup and a lack luster gloom to the skin. This issue can especially be troublesome to those who suffer from acne or any skin types with an already sluggish cell turn over ability. Unless you are a 20 year old with "perfect and normal skin", using coconut oil as a moisturizer on a consistent and long term basis is a no no.

If you feel your skin needs more "hydration" I suggest adding a corrective professional serum to your home care regimen. Hyaluronic Acid is one of my favorite ingredients to quench the skin and to provide suppleness, plumping, and hydration. It is an ingredients that can benefit all skin types, especially those who are dry, dehydrated, sensitive, and even break-out prone.

My favorite Hyaluronic Acid product is Hyaluronic Boosting Serum from PCA Skin. Their particular formula has done wonders on my clients' skin and has been a huge "game changer".

Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate attract and hold 1,000 times their weight in water on the surface of the skin for instant smoothing and hydration. Additionally, Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper into the skin, attracting and holding moisture that’s already in the skin, and plumps fine lines from below the skin surface. Lastly, the propietary HA-Pro Complex blend stimulates the production of the skin’s own hyaluronic acid and delivers 24-hour hydration which leads to long-term hydration and anti-aging.

So rather than reach for a comedogenic oil like coconut oil, or a "richer/heavier" moisturizer for hydration, opt to add a corrective serum such as PCA Hyaluronic Boosting Serum to your routine. Not only will a product like this help address your current skin care concerns, it will also help with overall anti-aging, or what I like to call Graceful Aging.
